Once you've made the decision to stop smoking, you need to choose the right method of quitting for you.

All methods have advantages and disadvantages, but for many, the easiest way is to use one of the new medications to stop smoking. It's a good idea to take a look at them all, and consult your doctor before deciding.
In any case, many of these relatively painless aids, such as the new prescription pill to stop smoking, are only available from your doctor.

It's also important to enlist support and encouragement from your family and friends. You can quit smoking on your own but it's a lot easier if you have support from the people who are important to you.

Cold Turkey - If you have a great deal of willpower and a strong desire to quit smoking, you may be able to do it cold turkey. Quitting cold turkey means that you stop dead, on your own!
It doesn't mean that you can't use medications that help stop smoking.

Whether it's best to stop smoking 'naturally' depends on your metabolism. If you absorb nicotine slowly then you'll find it easier to succeed by quitting cold turkey.

But it you are strongly physically addicted to nicotine then you may find that you need a nicotine substitute.

Slowly Cutting Down - Rather than quitting cold turkey, some people prefer to gradually reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke each day. In order for this to work you need to have a plan to reduce your smoking by a certain amount each day and a goal for the day when you want to be completely smoke-free.
There are many strategies you can use. You could smoke one less cigarette each day; you smoke your first cigarette at a later time every day; or you could set limits on the number of cigarettes you'll smoke in a morning or an afternoon or evening.

Nicotine Substitutes - come in the forms of gum, sprays, lozenges and patches. All help to reduce your craving for nicotine which is the physical need which makes you want to smoke. The brain has become accustomed to getting lots of nicotine so if you intend to cut sown gradually this makes it easier.

Zyban - Zyban is an antidepressant drug with many prorprietary names, such as Welbutrin, which has been shown to be effective in reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms. It is available only by doctor's prescription.
Another of the prescription aids to stop smoking is Champix, which is also known by several names.
There are a variety of other prescription drugs to stop smoking, and new drugs to stop smoking come out fairly often, so it's a good idea to get a list of drugs to stop smoking from your doctor.

Hypnotherapy. Hypnosis has also been shown in clinical trials to help overcome nicotine cravings. It seems to be most effective in those who have a strong desire to quit.
